The product which is being offered here is the high-quality live House Crickets (Acheta domesticus). The crickets are one of the most popular feeder foods for our exotic pets such as reptiles, birds, amphibians, and insectivorous arthropods.
The House Cricket is a bush cricket, which is a member of the true crickets family (Gryllidae). When the creatures are fully grown, they have wings that are up to 20 mm long. They have long antennae and are yellowish with dark brown markings. These creatures are very thermophilic and can often be found in kitchens, boiler rooms, bakeries, breweries, etc. Outdoors, you can find them at waste disposal sites. They hide in the day and look for food at night. They are omnivores but prefer a plant-based diet. When they move quickly, they can also jump a little. They are characterised by the chirping noise that the males make to attract the females in the dark. House crickets are very popular feed insects for animals in terrariums.
The crickets should be unpacked as soon as they arrive and transferred into a suitable container. Cut several egg trays to suit your container and place them on their sides which provide an ideal space for the crickets to perch. Add a saucer of Progrub on the floor of the container, place some sliced carrot in to provide moisture, or if you prefer you can also provide drinking water or solid water gel. Crickets should be kept at an ideal temperature of 18°C – 22°C in a dark area. A good video guide showing and explaining the keeping and breeding conditions for this species can be watched here.
